Colossal Red Dragon - CoverThe Colossal Red Dragon is a sight to behold. The thing stands close to 14″ tall and is close to 14″ wide. I thought the Gargantuan Black Dragon was big – but it looks tiny in comparison now.

Even if you’re not into D&D minis, this is still an astounding model that will be a great addition to anyone’s collection.

  1. Head shot showing the breath weapon exiting the mouth
  2. A nice 3/4 frontal view
  3. Over the shoulder
  4. The work on the dorsal/back muscles is exceptionally well done
  5. I placed a medium-sized creature on the base – pay attention to the scale. Most people don’t notice the little guy without the red arrow.
  6. And finally, standing next to the Gargantuan Black (which looks tiny by comparison!)

Personally, I think the pictures speak for themselves – this is a great piece that has had a great amount of attention paid to it.

The Negatives

The major complaint that I have is the breath weapon. From certain angles it looks alright. From most, however, it looks really cheesy. I like the fact that they decided to do something “special” with the colossal red, but it’s just not working for me (and a few other people I’ve talked to that’ve seen it). Beyond that, the translucent plastic doesn’t hold up to the rest of the model and it looks unfortunately fake.

On my model at least, the breath weapon seems to “come out the side of it’s mouth”. Look at picture #6 to see what I mean in particular. I have a lot of minis and more than a few of them have bent/curved parts just from shipping. I don’t know if the head or the breath weapon should be at a different angle, but everything looks fine without the breath weapon “installed”.

The only other negative thing that I can say is that it’s A LOT bigger than I expected. This isn’t “really” a bad thing, but it certainly requires more room than the gargantuan black by far and it’s important to know that before getting one if you’re buying it online vs. from a gaming store. Personally, I love the size – it was just surprising.

All-In-All

This is a great model and something that people will love. The wings themselves are semi-translucent and give the piece an amazing look. While the breath weapon is dumb, it can be removed easily (more specifically, not even put in in the first place) and not distract from the piece at all (and I personally think it looks better without it).

The list price for this impressive piece is $75, but you can get it on Amazon for just under $48 – which is more than worth this limited edition model.

For anyone that enjoys collectables, dragon models or simply wants to own a spectacular D&D icon, the Colossal Red Dragon is a must-have.

[...] It looks to me as if the blue is in more of a “stalking” pose while the red and black were in “standing” poses up on their hind legs – which is perfect for the blue. Even from this small picture you can see what should be some amazing detail in the wing muscles. [...]

[...] If you liked the look of the gargantuan black, you’re definitely going to like the gargantuan blue. While neither have anything on the colossal red, the blue has it’s own personality and feel. Be sure to check out the rest of the pics which includes a side-by-side with the gargantuan black. [...]
