Your +1 Flaming Longsword has served you well through all your battles. But through it all, have you ever thought “What does my flaming sword do when I’m not killing things?”

Does it burn while in your sheath? If so, is your sheath flame retardant? Can you start a fire in the woods with your flaming sword? How do you turn it on or off - and how much effort does that take?

Let’s check it out.

D&D Chess Set - Coming In October

Posted by Mike on September 5th, 2006

Like D&D? Like chess? If so, then this may be the chess set for you.

D&D Chess Set - October 2006

I’d like to see a better close-up than the shot that Wizards has on their site, but we’re still at least a month out.

Wizards is sticking with it’s bread & butter and the whole set “depicts the eternal struggle between the good and evil dragons of the Dungeons & Dragons game”.

With a $200 retail price (which we can probably find cheaper after launch), it better be damn nice.

Let’s Talk About Scale

Posted by Mike on September 4th, 2006

Scale - FrontOne of the most frequent things that adventurers forget about is scale - the difference in size between them and some of their opponents. Let’s face it, no sane medium-sized creature will ever willfully seek out and attack a creature that’s huge or larger except under very specific circumstances. In addition, chances are we’d flee from a huge creature as quickly as we could.

Spring Attack - Better Than You May Think

Posted by Mike on August 31st, 2006

I think everyone can agree that Spring Attack is a good feat.

It allows fighter types to effectively combat opponents with reach weapons or larger opponents with natural reach without subjecting themselves to painful Attacks of Opportunity. However, I think most people view Spring Attack as “that last feat they have to take before they can get Whirlwind Attack”.

Let’s talk about how Spring Attack is usually used and then build on what it can do.

Bringing Back 2nd ed-styled Weapons

Posted by Mike on August 30th, 2006

One thing that I thought was a lot of fun in 2nd edition was the goofy sorts of weapons you could create. This was before 3.x introduced the stricter way of pricing and limiting weapons to a set +10 max for non-epic weapons. While I think this change was for the best, it also limits some of the fun and randomness.

A good example of a weapon that I’m talking about would be a +1 longsword that’s +3 against cats and +3 against lizards.

First, let’s come up with a name for the ability that I’m proposing. Since I’ve heard the term “adaptive” used a number of times for various homebrew abilities, I’m going to shy away from that. Plus, the weapon doesn’t “change” per se, it’s merely more effective against certain types of creatures. How about Selective?
