Erfworld - New Webcomic Debut

Posted by Mike on December 7th, 2006

Erfworld PanelErfworld, a new webcomic written by Rob Balder and illustrated by Jamie Noguchi has debuted on http://www.giantitp.com/. It’s scheduled to update every Tuesday and Thursday.

Rich Berlew, webmaster of GiantITP.com and the author of the brilliant webcomic Order of the Stick is now hosting Erfworld on his site. OotS updates every Monday, Wednesday and Friday - which means you get a new comic every week day by going to one place.

Every once in a while I find a webcomic that I enjoy and then must devote countless hours reading the thing from the beginning because I’ve managed to catch it some hundred episodes into the strip. You can avoid this time sink by heading over to Erfworld and read the first 6 comics right now.

It’s certainly strange, but very intriguing and I enjoyed reading the first six that were posted. I’ll definitely be coming back to stay current with both OotS and Erfworld.

New In December

Posted by Mike on December 1st, 2006

Being the first of the month, it’s a great time to throw out some linkage for what new content’s available to you. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot going on in December.

Fiendish Codex II (accessory)

Through subtle plotting and brutal aggression, the forces of the Nine Hells seek to corrupt or dominate all who stand against them. These fiends, as ancient and terrible as any in the multiverse, forge armies out of the souls of the wicked and use them to enforce their iron rule. Can your adventurers stand against the might and tyranny of the Nine Hells?

This supplement for the D&D game presents the definitive treatise on devils and their malefic home. Along with information about the physiology, psychology, society, and schemes of the devils themselves, you’ll find feats, spells, items, and tactics commonly employed by these infernal creatures and those who oppose them. This book also provides detailed information on various devils, archdevils, and the layers of the Nine Hells.

Fantastic Locations: The Frostfell Rift (accessory)

The latest Fantastic Locations release, with stunning new maps.

Fantastic Locations: The Frostfell Rift provides two doublesided poster maps designed for use with D&D Miniatures, plus a 16-page black-and-white encounter booklet for use with RPG campaigns. The maps in this product showcase exciting planar environments, including the icy Frostfell Rift, while the encounter booklet illustrates how Dungeon Masters can use the maps again and again in their D&D roleplaying game campaigns.

The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde (adventure)

Centuries ago, forces of good and evil collided in a titanic battle at the mountain fortress of Slaughtergarde. Armies of men, angels, elves, and dwarves fought and defeated a rampaging demon horde, banished its demon prince, and tore Slaughtergarde apart, hurling it back into the Abyss. However, the destruction of Slaughtergarde was incomplete. Parts of the fortress were embedded underneath the Valley of Obelisks, buried for all time. Now, malign forces have found Slaughtergarde’s dark chambers, and they toil ceaselessly to restore the magic gates that will reconnect Slaughtergarde to the Abyss. If they aren’t stopped, a new demon horde may emerge from the shattered fortress to rampage across the world.

The Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde is the launchpad for a new D&D campaign. Inside is enough activity to take 1st-level D&D characters to 7th level, as well as plenty of raw materials you can use for further exploration. It includes a 64-page adventure book, a 64-page campaign book, a 16-page players’ book, an 8-page illustration booklet, and a double-sided battle map designed for use with official D&D Miniatures.

Pie-cosahedron

Pie-cosahedronWhile this may result in a horribly messy gaming space (wait… that won’t be any different from normal!), this is one delicious looking d20 made from pecan pies!

Thanks to instructables for this mouth-watering polyhedron! Check out the step-by-step here.

Scrag.net Hiatus

Posted by Administrator on November 29th, 2006

I’m sorry to report to those that read this blog, but Scrag.net is going to be limiting the updates over the month of December significantly.

Not only do the holidays suck a great amount of personal time from everyone, but I’m going to be moving into a new place and transitioning into a new position at work. Both of those things will consume massive amounts of time throughout December (as well as the past week or two).

Once the new year kicks off, I hope to get back into a more regular updating routine. Up until this break, I was managing a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday update rotation, and that seemed to work rather well.

In the meantime, I’ll update when I can and try to get some good reviews in ‘07 posted.

Lapis Guardian (A.K.A. Pet Rock)

Solo adventurers or small parties are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to resting and standing watch. Adding spellcasters into the mix only makes the matter worse.

Wizards, who seem to be unable to solve mundane problems with anything but magical solutions, have naturally created a small magical devices to help keep an eye out while they rest.

+1 Flaming, Flaming, Flaming Longsword

Posted by Mike on November 21st, 2006

I’ve been witness to a bunch of heated arguments about how stacking the same weapon enchantment on the same weapon works. There are clear sides in this battle for and against it. I used to be in the “sure, why not” camp, but I find myself squarely on the “nope, it won’t work” side now.

Here’s my attempt to put this argument to bed.

Thinking Like A Troll

Posted by Mike on November 17th, 2006

TrollLet’s face it - one of the scariest monsters to face for a large part of your adventuring career is trolls.

They’re large, they have high physical stats and worse of all - they regenerate 5 hit points per round. This sort of near-invulnerability tends to lend itself to a level of fearlessness that is hard to properly capture and goes largely ignored by most DMs.

Unfortunately, many DMs run trolls as “harder to kill NPCs” and don’t get into the psychology of these monsters. A near-invulnerability to most things will likely lend itself to a way of thinking that’s not immediately obvious. Let’s explore this a bit and look at some fun tactics for trolls.
