Why’s My Bag Of Holding So Heavy?

Posted by Mike on October 9th, 2006

The Bag of Holding is an iconic magic item in D&D.

This appears to be a common cloth sack about 2 feet by 4 feet in size. The bag of holding opens into a nondimensional space: Its inside is larger than its outside dimensions. Regardless of what is put into the bag, it weighs a fixed amount.

It makes sense that the bag weighs the same empty as full, but what it doesn’t explain is why they weigh so much in the first place.

High Con Characters Take Longer To Heal

Posted by Mike on October 6th, 2006

Natural healing is a very simple mechanic.

Natural Healing

With a full night’s rest (8 hours of sleep or more), you recover 1 hit point per character level. Any significant interruption during your rest prevents you from healing that night.

This unfortunately makes little sense and ends up screwing the characters with the most hit points.

See the problem? Dig in to learn more, this is a long one.

Manticore Bracers

Posted by Mike on October 5th, 2006

Manticore Bracers are worn like normal bracers, fully covering the wrist and forearm. In their normal state they appear to be a pair of sturdy leather bracers offering no armor bonus.

As a standard action, each bracer has five 6-10″ spikes that extend from the arm. The spikes can be retracted in a similar manner. These spikes provide two benefits.

  1. When present, these spikes act as +1 Armor Spikes sized for the creature wielding them. When worn, someone not proficient with Armor Spikes does not incur the usual -4 penalty for non-proficiency.
  2. Each spike can be shot similar to a manticore’s tail spikes. As a standard action the wearer can shoot at most 4 spikes in a given round at up to as many targets. The wearer needs to make separate ranged attacks for each spike. Each spike deals 1d8+2 points of damage and has a range of 180′. All prospective targets must be within 30′ of each other. The spikes themselves are treated as +1 darts for overcoming damage reduction. Each spike can only be used once per day and will reform the next day.

Moderate transmutation; CL 11th; Craft Wondrous Item, Animate Objects, Summon Monster III; Price 14,500 gp.

Manticore Bracers are exceptionally useful for someone that doesn’t threaten the area around them since Armor Spikes can do that for them. The ability to make 4 ranged attacks in a round is also exceptionally useful for characters that do not have a high BAB and wish to stay out of melee.

Redefining The Heal Skill

Posted by Mike on October 3rd, 2006

The Heal Skill is one that often gets overlooked by most people since magic tends to replace its usefulness quite easily. In those few times that nobody has any healing spells or potions and a comrade’s lying on the ground dying, the rest of the PCs take turn making untrained Heal checks hoping for a high roll.

I think some changes are in order.

I’ll be on vacation all next week, so updates will be sparse, if at all.

In the meantime, feel free to check out the web comics on the right. Order of the Stick comes HIGHLY recommended by us!

I’ll try to get some more stuff out by the time I leave, but no promises.
